What Does It Mean To Be Asleep At The Midnight Hour?

"While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept" (Matt. 25:5).

This passage clearly predicts that, first, all those who are professed to be waiting and watching for the Lord's return will fall asleep before He gets here, and, second, they will all get woke up just before the Lord arrives.

If we believe that we are living at that period of time when the Lord will come, then how do the above two factors apply? How are we asleep? And what is the "cry made" that wakes us up?

We are asleep in our ideas and in our attitudes concerning the Lord's return. First, consider our ideas. The masses have swallowed Scofield/Darbyism (the dispensational premillennial end-time Bible prophecy theory concocted by religious heretics of the nineteenth century) hook, line, and sinker, and so, are profoundly deceived in what the Bible really teaches about the second coming of Christ. They have a wrong set of ideas that has created a misguided world view that can only self-destruct by virtue of its inherent falsity.

Postponed kingdom, secret pre-trib rapture of the church, future seven year timetable of end-time tribulation events with which to start, return of Christ to set up Jewish millennial reign--all of these ideas are false, and are rooted and tied together in a system of theology based on Sir Robert Anderson's theory of interpreting Daniel's prophecy of the Seventy Weeks. Once we see through the basic fallacy here the entire array of modern Darbyite end-time Bible prophecy fantasies erected thereon collapses in a heap of irrational nonsense.

This wrong set of ideas that the modern masses have bought into has resulted in the development of a string of wrong attitudes toward the matter of our Lord's return. Feelings of jaundice, skepticism, and indifference are only a few of the problems that result when faith is placed in ideas that are false. Our realization of this condition starts the process of awakening. The "cry made," then, is nothing more or less than our now being confronted by the truth.
